Why don’t schools teach refrigeration?

With the skills gap increasing, the IOR wants to encourage schools to get involved in explaining to students how fantastic the refrigeration and air conditioning industries are, both as an interesting application of science and as a future career.

The IOR is seeking help from other members of the industry to spread the word by telling any schools, teachers or children they may know all about Fantastic Fridges.

It believes that sharing your passion for the sector is a rewarding experience, as confirmed by Sam Buckell from the Women in RACHP network, who recently said: “I was very honoured to be asked to support the IOR Cool for Schools competition. It is a fun way to get the IOR and the industry into schools and into the minds of young people.

“As so often discovered, people have joined our industry as they were aware of it because of a relative or family friend. People just don’t hear about us at schools. The more fun activities that we can highlight to young people the better. I think that through schools is really one of the most direct ways initially that we can do this.”

Fantastic Fridges is an online resource designed for schools to use, with content linked to national curriculum areas. Schools need to teach practical science as part of their Gatsby targets and to get closer to industry by using real life examples.

Schools using Fantastic Fridges could also win some science prizes with IOR’s Cool for School competition, which challenges Key Stage three students (11 to 14-year olds) to come up with an experiment related to the fields of refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumps.

This fun and interactive way of introducing the science of refrigeration to students also draws on their maths, technical and engineering skills, as well as their creativity.

Participants could win a range of science kit prizes for their school packed with equipment, books and ideas to make science lessons fun. Prizes range from £1000 to £2000 in value.

All entries will get a Certificate of Merit to recognise their work and highlight the skills and Gatsby Benchmarks that were involved.

For students wanting to take part they simply need to record a refrigeration related experiment and submit it to the IOR before 01 December.
