Tesco, M&S and Booths report sales growth

Tesco saw a 0.7% increase in UK like-for-like sales over the Christmas period (for the six weeks ending 7th January), with food like-for-like sales up by 1.3%.

Tesco saw a 0.7% increase in UK like-for-like sales over the Christmas period (for the six weeks ending 7th January), with food like-for-like sales up by 1.3%.

The retailer has also released its third quarter trading statement today. During the 13 weeks ending 26th November 2016 UK like-for-like sales grew by 1.8%. Group like-for-like sales rose by 1.5%.

Chief executive Dave Lewis said: 'We are very encouraged by the sustained strong progress that we are making across the Group. In the UK, we saw our eighth consecutive quarter of volume growth and delivered a third successful Christmas.'

Marks and Spencer also saw third quarter like-for-like sales growth. Food sales were up by 0.6% on a like-for-like basis, with total food sales up by 5.6%.

Steve Rowe, M&S chief executive, said: “Our Food business continues to grow market share with customers recognising our product as special and different. Our Simply Food store pipeline remains strong.”

Meanwhile, family-run northern food retailer Booths saw its Christmas week sales reach a record £10m, while like-for-like sales in the Christmas three week trading period were up by 2.6%.
