BUILDING upon its experience in medium temperature, Copeland is now launching a Digital Scroll dedicated to low temperature applications. The strength of this new model, ZFD18KVE, is the combination of digital and vapour injection technology. and offers energy efficiency as good as the best Copeland semi-hermetic compressors, says the company.
Largest scroll

Copeland is also extending its refrigeration scroll range by introducing a 30hp scroll compressor for medium temperature applications with R404A. This new ZB220KCE extends the scroll range to 50KW capacity. As with all scroll products, this model can be applied in a multiple compressor pack.

CO2 scroll

As an alternative to fluorocarbons, CO2 is being tested in pilot applications in supermarkets, and is already used on a regular basis in some regions. Manufacturers can now design their systems with the new Copeland ZO compressor (shown below).

Target is the low temperature stage of a supermarket cascade system where CO2 operates in subcritical mode. The condenser side is maintained typically at -5°C by the cascade cooler. Different system designs are possible for the cascade cooler, including R404A, R717 (NH3) and CO2 transcritical.

Four models, ZO34 to ZO104, offer 8-22kW at low temperature cascade conditions (-35°C evaporating, 10°C condensing temperature).

CO2 offerings from Alco Controls include electronic expansion valves/drivers, pressure transmitters and filter driers.

The new OM4 oil management system has been designed to include subcritical CO2 applications with a maximum pressure of 43 bar. Its function is to supervise and to control the oil level in the crankcase of refrigerant compressors.

The oil level is measured by a special float and therefore independent from oil foam. A hall sensor is used to convert the oil level into an electric signal, used by the controller.

If the oil level is falling below the optimised level, an integrated solenoid opens automatically and feeds oil into the crankcase. If the oil level further falls below the alarm level, a SPDT contact is used.

Commercial ac scroll

Copeland Scroll range is now available for single Scroll 2-30hp in R410A and 1.5-60hp in R407C which means up to 500kW for a R410A chiller with two circuits (and three compressors per circuit) and up to 650kW with R407C. Featuring advanced scroll temperature protection (ASPT). the new design is of a uniform platform offering size, weight, and sound reduction in all models from 7.5-15hp. For the OEM it simplifies design and manufacturing as well as reducing inventory, as the same compressor can now be used for single, tandem, and trio applications. Uneven tandems with large commercial scrolls up to 30Hp have been qualified to provide a wide range of capacities and modulation capabilities.

In 2008 Copeland is planning to extend the R410A Scroll range up to 40hp. This will enable OEMs to extend the chiller scroll range up to 620kW (for a chiller with two circuits and three compressors per circuits).
