Reprieve for HFCs as Euro ban is overturned

AS SOME expected, the European Parliament has rejected the amendments to the F-Gas regulations recently recommended by the EU environment committee which could have seen HFC refrigerants banned from 2010. The European Parliament also rejected proposals to change the legal basis of the regulations which would have allowed individual member states to introduce their own selective HFC sanctions and legalised the bans imposed by countries like Denmark and Austria.

Fight this ban!

CEDRIC Sloan, director general of the manufacturers association FETA, has called on the industry to lobby their MPs and MEPs in an effort to overturn amendments to the F-Gas regulations which could see the banning of HFCs throughout Europe by 2010.

Public fails to warm to heat pumps

A RECENT survey by Daikin distributor Space Air has revealed just how ignorant the UK public is of air conditioning, particularly heat pumps, and how home owners are totally unaware of Government reductions in VAT on heat pump installations. As a result, Space Air has called on energy minister Malcolm Wicks to make a more formal announcement about the potential benefits for customers.

HISENSE Air Conditioner Co has bid $111m for the 262 million shares owned by Greencool in fellow Chinese manufacturer, the troubled, Kelon. Guangdong Greencool is Kelon's largest shareholder with a 26.43% stake.

Johnson Controls set to buy York

JOHNSON Controls has announced its intention to buy US hvacr equipment manufacturer York for £1.8bn ($3.2bn). The deal, which has been approved by the boards of directors of both companies, will include the assumption of approximately £443m ($800m) of York debt. The deal is expected to be completed in December and is subject to shareholder approval and regulatory approvals.

Hiring the wrong contractor is a waste

IN THE light of the reclassification of refrigerants as hazardous waste and the future imposition of refrigerant handling legislation, REFCOM, the register of companies competent to handle refrigerants in the UK, has made a renewed call for anyone hiring air conditioning contractors to exercise additional caution.

Refrigerant choice has little effect on energy efficiency

A NEW guidance note from the Institute of Refrigeration concludes that the choice of refrigerant has very little effect upon the energy efficiency of cooling systems - far more important is a properly maintained, well designed system.
