HPA calls for training standards on flammable refrigerants

The Heat Pump Association (HPA) has published a new Flammable Refrigerant Training Policy Statement recommending that all heat pump installers be trained in the safe handling of both F-Gas and non-F-Gas flammable refrigerants.

The statement aligns with the upcoming consultation on GB F-Gas regulation reform and recent EU moves to mandate certification for flammable refrigerants. It is backed by findings from a recent ACRIB survey of sector employers, including HPA members, which revealed strong support for mandatory certified training across the UK.

The survey also found:

  • High awareness of available qualifications for handling flammable refrigerants.
  • Widespread implementation of training programmes by employers.
  • Concern over regulatory gaps, particularly for non-fluorinated low-GWP refrigerants not covered by current certification rules.

Charlotte Lee, Chief Executive of the HPA, commented: “Today’s publication demonstrates the strong support from the sector for levelling the playing field in terms of installer training and certification requirements for both F-Gas and non-F-Gas flammable refrigerants. The HPA will continue to work with its members, stakeholders and policy officials to call for this alongside the expected review of GB F-Gas regulations.”
