WRefD 24: Temperature matters - absolutely

This year’s World Refrigeration Day (WRefD) is focusing on the theme ‘Temperature Matters.’ This theme underscores the profound impact of the refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump industry on indoor environmental quality, extending beyond mere cooling and heating.

World Refrigeration Day celebrates the people and technologies responsible for creating and maintaining the world we live in, a world dependent upon temperature-controlled environments. Centred around 26 June, the event is supported globally by industry, professional groups, scientific and engineering associations, as well as by governments and individuals.

Celebrating Lord Kelvin’s legacy

26 June this year marks the bicentenary of Lord Kelvin, a pioneer in thermodynamics, known for the absolute temperature scale. The theme 'Temperature Matters' pays homage to his legacy, highlighting the essential role temperature regulation plays in society. By exploring thermodynamics, WRefD 2024 will emphasise the importance of efficient temperature control in sustainable development, human comfort, and environmental protection amidst growing energy demands and climate change.

Why temperature matters

The chosen theme showcases the industry's technical expertise in providing cooled and heated environments, emphasising the significance of temperature control in daily life applications.

Heat pump technologies and decarbonisation

Lord Kelvin’s work has paved the way for heat pump technologies, central to low-carbon heating strategies. These technologies illustrate the application of refrigeration principles to heating, demonstrating the industry's critical role in global decarbonisation efforts.

Broad contributions of the industry

This year’s campaign will spotlight the refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump industry’s broader contributions. It will highlight the sector's role in maintaining food and medicine supply chains, effective and sustainable heating, and creating healthier, comfortable environments with cleaner air.

Global initiatives and education

WRefD 2024 will feature global initiatives aimed at educating the public on the various applications of air conditioning, refrigeration, and heat pumps. The ‘Temperature Matters’ theme ensures a broad focus, capturing global attention and discussing the sector's wide-scale significance. WRefD founder Stephen Gill stated, “This broad theme allows people worldwide to address local issues and target audiences. By focusing on a universal theme, WRefD 2024 aims to foster global recognition and discussion about the sector’s wide-ranging impact.”

Local engagement and career opportunities

The theme ‘Temperature Matters’ is designed to be universally relevant, encouraging regions to address their local interests. The campaign will also promote career opportunities in the HVACR sector, urging schools and colleges to explore diverse and impactful industry roles.

Temperature Matters...Absolutely!

Announcing this year’s theme, Stephen Gill remarked, “Temperature control is crucial not only for comfort and health but also for preserving food, medicines, and industrial processes. Temperature can mean the difference between life and death; temperature matters – absolutely.”

Join us on 26th June 2024 for World Refrigeration Day to celebrate and explore why ‘Temperature Matters’ in every aspect of our lives. Together, we can raise awareness and drive progress in the essential field of temperature management.
