Created by Enginuity and awarding organisation EAL, the initiative aims to raise the profile of vocational routes and celebrate the learners, apprentices and skilled workers who underpin the UK’s economy. The day will take place every year on the first Thursday of August.
The launch is being marked with a live televised edition of Steph on Skills: Powered by Enginuity, streamed on YouTube and social platforms at 10.00 and shared with news networks. The programme will feature young learners, employers, educators and government leaders, with celebrations taking place across workplaces and colleges nationwide.
McGovern, who began her career as an Apprentice Engineer at Black+Decker on Teesside, said the event was “long overdue”, adding: “Why should academics have all the fun and glory? We have graduation days, A-Level Day, GCSE Day – now Vocational Celebration Day. Vocational learners are the lifeblood of our country and yet have been left in the shadows. We want to make sure that this changes and these brilliant people get to celebrate in style.”
Ann Watson MBE, CEO of Enginuity, described the day as a gift to the vocational community: “Congratulations to all those qualifying this year – this is a major achievement for those pursuing vocational careers. Take a bow, enjoy your moment in the spotlight and celebrate in the knowledge that you are well on the way to securing a rewarding career that will benefit you, your family and the country as a whole.”
Although Enginuity and EAL operate primarily in engineering and manufacturing, both organisations are encouraging participation from all vocational sectors, from skilled trades and technicians to carers, culinary professionals and creative artisans.
The initiative highlights the role of vocational learning in supporting economic growth, tackling skills gaps and improving social mobility. Apprenticeships, part-time study and work-based training continue to offer accessible pathways for people of all backgrounds, ages and abilities.
Employers, educators and individuals are encouraged to take part by hosting events, sharing success stories and posting their vocational journeys on social media using #VocationalCelebrationDay and #CelebrateVocational.
