Trane and Honeywell address greenhouse gas emissions at Chillventa

Trane and Honeywell have announced that they are working together to increase energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).

At Chillventa this week the companies are introducing visitors to the Trane Series E CenTraVac chiller using Honeywell’s Solstice zd, a next generation refrigerant with global warming potential (GWP) of just one (according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). It meets the most stringent regulatory requirements for GHG emissions including European Union F-gas regulation.

Dave Regnery, president of Trane North America, Europe, Middle East, and Africa, said: “The Series E is consistent with our company-wide commitment to introduce products that are significantly more energy and operationally efficient, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Series E CenTraVac is 10 per cent more energy efficient than the next available chiller and it uses refrigerant with significantly lower GWP.

“We want to offer our customers chiller options that fit into the environmental plans of our customers without compromising safety, reliability and performance.”

The Trane Series E CenTraVac is a large-capacity chiller (capacities from 2600kW to 14,000kW) for applications like comfort cooling of large commercial buildings including district cooling. It is available in Europe, the Middle East and other 50hz markets, and received Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) Certification. It uses Solstice zd, a low-pressure and low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant from Honeywell.

George Koutsaftes, global business director for the Honeywell refrigerants business, said: “Honeywell is committed to developing environmentally-preferable refrigerants that are highly effective and easy for customers like Trane to adopt. The use of Solstice zd in the Trane Series E chiller is great news for the environment and building owners who want to transition to a refrigerant with a lower global warming potential and fantastic energy efficiency performance.”

Solstice zd is part of the Honeywell family of Solstice-branded products that helps customers lower their carbon footprint without sacrificing end-product performance. Solstice zd’s global warming potential of just 1 helps equipment manufactures comply with current and future environmental regulations. Solstice zd is a safe refrigerant that is non-flammable with an A1 rating by ASHRAE, not a volatile organic compound, and is safe for use as a refrigerant.

The Trane Series E CenTraVac builds upon direct-drive, multi-stage, semi-hermetic low pressure design technology and allows for heat pump, heat recovery and free-cooling applications resulting in increased sustainability. It also offers an ‘ice making’ feature for ice-enhanced cooling during peak demand.
