Tesco to phase-out HFCs

TESCO is to phase-out HFCs in its refrigeration systems in a programme of measures to reduce the supermarket chain's carbon footprint.
Speaking at a joint forum for Tesco stakeholders, chief executive Sir Terry Leahy said that the company was aware of its reliance on HFCs in its refrigeration systems and the fact that they are potent greenhouse gases. 'We are therefore leading a programme to phase out their use,' he said.

'We have so far installed two alternative non-HFC systems - one based on CO2 and one combining CO2 and hydrocarbon refrigerants.

'We are sharing what we learn with all interested parties to speed up and promote the use of natural refrigerants.'
