SkyParks Business Centre Project - Malta Airport

MA&A Services Ltd recently completed a high level extensive build at SkyParks Business Centre Malta. They appointed Zarb Installations as a subcontractor to supply and install the air conditioning roof support systems. Zarb used the well established FLEXI frames for condensers, VRF and air handling units launched by Pump House back in 2009.
Environmental Certification for SkyParks Business Centre
The assessment process conducted by BREEAM will lead to SkyParks becoming Malta's first grade A office park. Based in the UK, BREEAM is the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design and has become the most effective measure used to describe a building's environmental performance.

SkyParks Business Centre, located at Malta Airport invested in the highest level of energy efficient systems for air conditioning, air ventilation, heat recovery units and vertical transportation and plans to maximise energy conservation whilst limiting wastages. In doing so SkyParks intends to ensure an improved internal environment with high indoor air quality.

This was the background to the recent contract for Zarb installations who worked with a consultant to ensure the specifications and approvals of the air conditioning equipment were met. MA&A Services Limited an approved Daikin accredited installer and Malta's exclusive agent worked with the specification to ensure that all aspect of the air conditioning, ventilation and heat recovery units would allow for optimised operation to the facilities located on all seven levels.

Project Requirements
Skyparks Business Centre scores highly on location situated just two minutes from the busy Malta Airport Terminal makes it an ideal position for international trading companies. The office spaces on each level, with an open plan layout are designed to suit the company's requirements. Other facilities include restaurants, childcare centre, fitness, wellbeing centre and a medi-care facility to provide overall comfort, confidence and efficiency for the employee's located within the centre.

The project specification issued to MA&A Services Ltd was to ensure that all these amenities would be controlled from the VRV outdoor units. The 140 outdoor units chosen were all Daikin to provide heat, ventilation and air conditioning throughout the seven floors of the building.

Roof Mounting Frames
In keeping with the building's environmental performance a significant decision by MA&A Services Ltd & Zarb installations was the selection of suitable roof mounting equipment. Careful consideration needed to be made as to the type of specification of the condenser mounting frames to be used. The VRV units were arrangement in eight runs with the longest run consisting of 1 x BASE-Frame and 15 x EXTENDER-Frames.

Josef, explained: 'The engineers only allocated one working week to assemble the frames and lift the Daikin Units onto the roof, so we knew time was going to be an issue because this job was so large.

Having previously used the Pump House Flexi Frames, I understood how the modular design worked which makes them very easy and quick to erect. Our decision was simple - this build could have taken the team at least five days using other roof support systems, instead it took us just two!'

The team had to ensure that the units were located over adequate load bearing roof supports and all of the 100+ frames were assembled in situ. The engineer specified that each frame would be located in line and levelled with laser lights to ensure accurate positioning.

Pump House were happy to provide full pre-sales support. 'We sent the drawing and schedule of the a/c equipment, along with weight and dimensions and Pump House helped us specify the frames required', said Josef.

'This job required 8 x FLEXI BASE-FRAMES and 105 x FLEXI EXTENDER-FRAMES, so we were thankful that they arrived individually boxed with all components and instructions to hand.'

Pump House launched the FLEXI range of roof support products for mounting equipment such as condenser, VRF units and air handling units in 2009. The flexi frame is simple in design which allows contractors to design their own systems to suit the specification.

The FLEXI frame has only two part numbers: BASE- FRAME & EXTENDER-FRAME making ordering simple, and being designed as a flat pack kit the delivery process is straight forward too.

FLEXI frame has a weight load rating of 500kg and has been overload tested up to 5 tonnes.
