Sainsbury’s and Lidl report increased Christmas sales

The company has also announced record Christmas sales of more than £1bn across the group, which also includes recently acquired Argos. Combined Sainsbury’s and Argos like-for-like sales were up by 1.0%.

Sainsbury’s has seen a 0.1% rise in like-for-like retail sales for the 15 weeks to 7 January this year.

Chief executive Mike Coupe said: “The market remains very competitive and the impact of the devaluation of sterling remains uncertain. However, we are well placed to navigate the external environment and remain focused on delivering our strategy.”

Separately, Lidl has reported a 10% year-on-year rise in sales over the Christmas trading period.
