Refrigeration-free cold drink dispenser unveiled

UK: The first dispenser in Europe of a refrigeration-free drinks can has been unveiled at the University of Surrey.
The ChillCan can chill a drink by about 15ºC at the push of a button on the base of the can. This releases pressurised carbon dioxide adsorbed onto activated carbon contained in an inner can.

The carbon dioxide is said to come from waste gases and the activated carbon from waste coconut shells.

The 500ml ChillCan, manufactured by the Joseph Company in California, took 20 years to develop. An initial design of the can was set to be launched in the UK in 1998 but was stopped by the Department of the Environment as it used R134a.

ChillCan's are expected to go on general sale in the UK next year.
