Mexichem moves to guarantee fluorspar supplies

REFRIGERANT producer Mexichem has moved to secure supplies of fluorspar - a vital element in the production of HFC refrigerants - having been given the go-ahead to acquire the fluorspar producer Fluorita de Mexico and the mine concessions of Las Sabinas.
With this acquisition, Mexichem says it will have access to fluorspar of the highest purity grade worldwide. The mine is said have proven reserves of over 13 million tons of high purity fluorspar which, added to the 50 million tons of reserves of Minera las Cuevas, reaffirms Mexichem as the largest integrated refrigerants producer in the world.
Besides the initial investment, Mexichem Fluor plans to invest over £9m in the modernization of its activities, increasing its annual production to more than 120 thousand tons.
