Manor Refrigerated Cabinets and coolsuredoors, which operate as trading divisions of Manor Concepts Limited, are working in collaboration with the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) to boost lean manufacturing processes.

Led by Manor Concepts' operations director Martin Corken (pictured right), the match-funded project involves ten individuals from various areas of the company, including managers, supervisors and office staff, taking part in ten days of training. The assigned MAS consultant works with the staff offering impartial and practical support, helping the businesses to embrace lean and efficient processes.

Mr Corken said: 'The first four days of training focusing on business improvement, took place over a two month period starting in June 2014.

'The remaining six sessions will see the ten individuals being split into two groups. Here they will focus on various manufacturing processes, specifically paint and welding projects, whilst being supported externally by MAS consultants.

'By training staff from a number of different areas within both divisions, we will have a cross-section of ten staff members with the capabilities to deliver improvement projects within the company. Staff will be able to use their training knowledge to standardise processes, for example using methods like SMED (Single-Minute Exchange of Die) to reduce waste across all areas.'

He continued: 'We are already seeing how the staff training with MAS have a better understanding of design for manufacturing, product costs and process analysis. This knowledge will benefit Manor Refrigerated Cabinets and coolsuredoors by streamlining our processes and reducing our costs.

'Once the first set of ten training sessions is completed in February 2015, we will then be able to train other staff on site. We plan to roll out the training gradually during the year, so that additional staff members will have the skill set to ensure all manufacturing processes are lean and efficient,' Mr Corken concluded.
