Jack Culhane gets SkillFRIDGE gold

Eastleigh College apprentice Jack Culhane, who is currently studying Level 2 Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, recently won the gold medal at the national SkillFRIDGE competition.

The three-day competition saw seven of the UK’s top acr apprentices compete for a place in the WorldSkills final. The competition, which was judged by industry experts, set challenges to test the apprentices' pipework, brazing, electrical and commissioning skills.

Mr Culhane trained hard for the competition and commented on his success: “It was a great opportunity and experience to be part of. It is something extra to add on my CV.”

To give him the best chance at winning, Mr Culhane asked for additional support in the lead up to the event to equip him with the skills required for the competition which his course had not yet taught him.

SkillFRIDGE is part of the wider WorldSkills competitions, where young professionals in further education and apprenticeships can flaunt their talents and grow confidence in their abilities.

Shaun Creech, lecturer in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, stated: “I’m so proud of Jack’s success. It’s a tough competition and a fantastic experience for him which I’m delighted to have supported him through, along with his other lecturer John North. Jack was a deserving winner and I’m sure he will go on to do even more great things!”

Eastleigh College encourages students to participate in competitions such as WorldSkills as a way for the young professionals to demonstrate their passion and commitment to their trade.
