IOR’s Beyond Refrigeration consults on net-zero policy recommendations for users of RACHP equipment

Beyond Refrigeration is an IOR environment initiative to support users of cooling on their journey to net zero. It has published for consultation two Policy Papers suggesting recommended changes to national policy, legislation, and incentives necessary to support changes in seven critical areas identified through our Beyond Refrigeration work.

IOR chief executive Miriam Rodway commented: “The IOR’s remit is to promote the advancement of cooling technology for the public benefit – addressing environmental issues are critical.  The Beyond Refrigeration template sets ambitious targets and shows that we believe that the net zero aspiration is possible for our sector - if we work together.  In developing the Template and the draft Policy Briefs we invite everyone– the entire range of users as well as specialists – to consider how they will engage in the journey to achieve net zero for our sector.”

Comments and feedback are invited on the following drafts available from ior.org.uk/beyondrefrigeration/policybriefs

The 'Heating and Cooling' policy brief recommendations are organised around the seven themes highlighted by Beyond Refrigeration namely:

  • Reducing the need for mechanical heating and cooling
  • Achieving best performance
  • Balancing heating and cooling
  • Making use of best available technology
  • Use energy intelligently
  • Developing the best people and skills
  • What Else? Whole System Sustainability and more.

The 'Developing the Best People and Skills' policy brief details policy options to effect lasting change for employers and people across three key target groups:

  • Owner operator knowledge and end-user awareness
  • Technician skills
  • Design and consulting engineer skills.

You can view the full Beyond Refrigeration Template showing ambitions and steps towards a net zero future for heating and cooling as well as a growing list of resources, case studies and tools at www.ior.org.uk/beyondrefrigeration

Comments on the Policy Briefs should be addressed to the Environment Committee at ior@ior.org.uk 23 November.
