Industry shows strong support for mandatory refrigerant training

ACRIB’s latest survey of 132 RACHP professionals reveals overwhelming industry backing for mandatory certified training in handling flammable refrigerants, carbon dioxide, and ammonia.

Conducted in spring 2025 and shared with DEFRA in August, the survey highlights readiness across the sector for enhanced training requirements under the anticipated revision of GB F-Gas Regulations. Over 80% of respondents were aware of existing certified training options, with many employers already investing in qualifications aligned to the ACRIB Flammable Refrigerant Training Specification. This high awareness is attributed to the survey’s distribution via trade associations and professional institutes, whose members are typically well-informed through their affiliations

Notably, 88% of respondents support mandatory certification for flammables, and 89% for CO2 and ammonia, mirroring EU regulatory shifts. However, views diverge on refresher training frequency: while some advocate for five-year renewals, others prefer reassessment only when legislation changes.

Microbusinesses (under four operatives) showed slightly lower uptake in certified training, prompting calls for more accessible support. Industry voices also stressed the need for enforcement and a level playing field, citing concerns over uncertified technicians and the cost burden on SMEs.

ACRIB has urged policymakers to consider these findings in shaping future refrigerant handling legislation.
