In ascendancy: Star Refrigeration makes Times top 100 list

MOST of the 267 staff at Star Refrigeration don't suffer stress, have confidence in bosses and believe they are paid fairly well - admissions that helped put this firm amongst the 100 best companies to work for.
Glasgow-based refrigeration firm Star Refrigeration has been placed 96 in the 2009 Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to work for list.

The company gets its best overall scores (65%) for 'Giving Something Back'. Its work to design, commission and maintain cooling technology while not overheating the environment has contributed to its inclusion in the list. The business gets a 80% score for protecting the environment.

Star Refrigeration said the company’s cooling solutions 'enable reduction in energy consumption, increased efficiency and minimisation of life cycle operating costs”. It also said staff at all levels are encouraged to participate and gain satisfaction from the positive contribution they can make to helping the environment.

As much as 78% of the company's staff have faith in CEO John Rowell who they say runs the firm on sound moral principles and doesn’t help good causes just for the publicity (63%). In total 77% feel confident about the leadership of senior management.

Refrigeration engineers typically earn about £30,000 and 63% feel fairly paid compared with others in the organisation.

Staff have share options and there are twice-yearly bonuses. Employees have life assurance and a non-contributory pension after three months, with the company contributing 7.5% of their salaries.

All staff have 27 days of annual holiday and staff can use work time to volunteer for charity.

The average length of service is eight years and a third of staff have been with the company for more than a decade.

As much as 79% say their health isn’t suffering due to work-related stress.

The firm funds an employee assistance helpline.

The same number of staff (79%) feel they can make a valuable contribution to the success of the company and 68% believe it makes a positive difference to the world.
