German call for split sales ban to unqualified individuals

THE German acr industry has joined with France in calling for a ban on sales of pre-charged split systems to non-certified persons unless sold with the services of a properly qualified installer.
The move comes in response to AREA proposals for a ban on pre-charged splits and follows a meeting by industry associations and representatives from major air conditioning manufacturers and suppliers in Germany, including Mitsubishi, Daikin, Carrier, CIAT, Walter Meier, LG, Stulz and Stiebel Eltron.

The German proposal to the EU echoes that of France in calling for pre-charged split units to be sold to non-certified persons only in connection with a qualified installation the installation costs being included in the purchase price.

Additionally, the call was for a ban on the sale of pre-charged splits through consumer outlets due to the risk of line breakage during installation. 'DIY installation kits' with pre-charged lines and quick-connectors were also targeted.

Like the UK, the Germans have also called for greater policing of F-gas compliance.
