Faulty pump flange led to ammonia leak

THE failure of a pump flange is thought to be responsible for a major ammonia leak in Vienna last week, that led to the evacuation of 4,000 people, affecting 62 people and hospitalising 50.
The leak last Tuesday evening at a Frigoscandia coldstore led to the closure of the local metro, the evacuation of local businesses and residences, including staff and residents at an Etap hotel and theatre-goers to a Cats musical. Ironically, the leak also led to the cancellation of a concert by German rock band Eisbrecher or, in English, Icebreaker.
