F Gas deadline fast approaching

Barely a day has gone by in the last few weeks without one MP or another getting caught with their fingers in the till.

MPs' claim for normal household appliances that us mere mortals need to earn and buy ourselves and then resign from the Cabinet for "personal" or "family" reasons (before they're sacked).

Our entire government seems to think that who their leader will be this week is far more important than working through the worst economic crisis in a generation. Constitutional reform is the current hot topic this week, although how we can sit back and allow those who've been robbing us blind with expenses carry out this reform is beyond me.

The words "moral compass" have been used a lot by politicians recently and yet most of us mortals know that there are very few in the House with any real sense of what's right and wrong - hence the lack of any Labour politicians coming forward with a leadership challenge. Preserving the status quo and milking the system for another year is infinitely preferable to having to look for proper work after a failed election.

But while our politicians are busying themselves in front of the TV cameras, our industry is heading into a minefield with the F Gas Regulation's implementation.

The acr industry has been crying out for a proper mandatory registration scheme for years. With F Gas we thought: "at last, government is going to regulate in the one area we actually want to them to".

Alas, the lack of bottle doesn't stop at the door of the Parliamentary Labour Party.

The government dithered endlessly over appointing REFCOM as the industry company registration scheme (REFCOM was named months ago but Government has failed to get the scheme signed up and running with ridiculous legal nonsense).

Now the industry is rife with talk of another two bodies being invited to tender for the register as well as REFCOM. Utter chaos ensues. The industry is left bewildered by what it has to do because of conflicting stories from the government's own departments.

And all the while we march steadily onward towards the July 4th deadline date for all companies to be registered to enable them to work legally - 4 weeks away, that's all!

The environmental lobbyists are itching for F Gas to fail - they don't care that it's the government's fault.

Sometimes I wonder if our government are in cahoots with them - they seem determined to undermine every effort the industry makes to improve itself.
