Engineering firm takes action on apprenticeship shortage

adi Group, a leading engineering firm, has launched a pre-apprenticeship scheme for 14-16 year olds, in line with new figures highlighting a deficit of high-quality apprenticeships.

According to a new survey by the Industry Apprentice Council, the opportunities that apprenticeships offer, most notably in engineering and manufacturing, are wholly insufficient. The need to teach these vital skills to ensure there are no gaps in the future workforce is paramount. adi’s pre-apprenticeship scheme aims to do that by introducing young people to the world of engineering at an early age.

The scheme which launched on 15 September will see adi take 12 students into its workshop for half a day each week and will occupy 10% of the students’ overall curriculum time.

Ceo of adi Group, Alan Lusty, said: “Our new pre-apprenticeship scheme marks a significant moment in our efforts to link industry and education. The skills gap is the result of a lapse between the economic needs of our country and those that prepare the younger generations to meet them.

“At adi, we recognise how crucial young, skilled apprentices are to securing a healthy economy and vibrant future for our country.”

He added: “More businesses need to follow our example by engaging with young people and encouraging them to consider engineering as an attractive potential career. We believe our pre-apprenticeship scheme will create a comprehensive model which other schools and employers will be able to replicate.”
