TESCO in Clapham Common, London, is the latest high street retailer to take advantage of the cooling and heating benefits of Clivet’s Versatemp systems. Building services consulting engineers ACDP specified Versatemp units for the 24,000ft2 store to meet the space constraints of the building.
Previously Tesco has installed electric heaters above entry doors.
Now heat is reclaimed from the display cabinet refrigeration system, which is normally discharged to the ambient air, and reuse this to carry out the heating normally achieved by the direct electric heaters.
This has now been achieved by passing the hot refrigerant gas through purpose-built dry blast coolers which have been designed with integral water coils incorporated into the Versatemp system water loop.
In this way outside air now passes over the condensing coils prior to the integral water coils. The heat from the refrigerant system is now picked up by the air and transferred to the Versatemp system water loop, heating the water before it enters the individual Versatemp units which are set to operate in the heat pump mode.
In total 27 Versatemp void-mounted units have been installed, these serving the door entry areas, cold aisles and office areas. For the office areas Versatemp reverse cycle heat pumps were employed, providing the necessary heating and cooling requirements. The Versatemp units supplied were taken from the EVH product range, with nominal cooling duties ranging from 1.5kW to 10kW. The units were supplied with two control options: the heat pump only units were supplied with BMS interface and the reverse cycle heat pump units were supplied with LCD display incorporating full diagnostic functions.
