EcoDesign directive could make systems less efficient

EUROPE: AREA president Graeme Fox has hit out at changes to the EcoDesign Directive which could actually make air conditioning or refrigeration systems less efficient.
In his latest blog on this website, Graeme takes the Europan Commission to task over additions to the new energy efficiency directive which would give 'bonuses' for the use of low GWP refrigerants.

Graeme Fox argues that any thoughts on specific refrigerant types should not be written into any Directive that is about energy efficiency.

'Concerns about fluorinated gases should be restricted to the F Gas Regulation review - in other words, in the domain of those who understand the issues,' he writes. 'If EcoDesign does go down this route there is a real possibility that people will be drawn down a route whereby the equipment actually becomes less energy efficient.'
