Downturn hits US manufacturers

THE current economic climate is reflected in the latest financial figures from major ac manufacturers on the other side of the Atlantic.
Johnson Controls Building Efficiency division, which includes the former York International business, has reported sales of $3bn in the three months to March 31, a 10% downturn in sales on the same period last year.

This is a far better performance than the Johnson group as a whole which recorded a loss of $193m in the first three months of 2009, down from a profit of $289 million in the first three months of 2008.

Meanwhile United Technologies has reported that new equipment orders in the first three months of this year were down 24% at its commercial air conditioning subsidiary Carrier.
