Danfoss aims to shift perspectives on the cold chain and HVAC at Chillventa

Danfoss will be participating at Chillventa 2024, taking place in Nuremberg, Germany from 8-10 October. At this year’s Chillventa, Danfoss will highlight the theme, “Shift your perspective on the cold chain”, and demonstrate how its comprehensive portfolio of refrigeration and HVAC solutions can create a sustainable cold chain, improving efficiency and reducing carbon emissions from farm to table.

Shifting perspectives on food processing & cold storage

When it comes to processing and storing food and beverages, food safety is paramount. Ensuring high-quality dairy, meat, fish and other foods requires an0000 unbroken, efficient cold chain. Danfoss’ solutions help food and beverage manufacturers to build refrigeration systems that prioritize safety and energy efficiency. “We collaborate with over 80% of the global cold chain operators, and our components enable cold storage in 90% of the global cold storage space,” says Anatoly, Mikhailov, Vice President Industrial Refrigeration at Danfoss. “This gives us the opportunity to work with international and local food processing companies to help them optimize their refrigeration systems. And this experience also helps us to identify pain points within refrigeration and develop the solutions necessary to address these and create more reliable, energy-efficient systems.”

By reducing ammonia charge while enhancing system performance

At Chillventa, Danfoss will debut its latest innovation for reducing energy consumption in cold storage: NeoCharge. NeoCharge is a groundbreaking technology that enables an ammonia direct expansion system to run without superheat and reduces the recirculation in a traditional flooded system to the lowest possible rate while maintaining the same performance level. Compared to traditional ammonia systems, NeoCharge can provide substantial potential energy savings. And in new-generation direct expansion systems, the energy savings can be up to 15%. The solution also enables system integrators to expand cold storage capacity up to 40% with the same charge, making it the most cost-effective and energy-efficient way to expand an existing cold store or build a new one.

By using CO2 for large-scale, industrial systems

Danfoss experts will also present the company’s full line of large components for industrial CO2 transcritical systems. As the food industry transitions to natural refrigerants, CO2 can be a sustainable, energy-efficient option that offers strong benefits for industrial applications when used with the right solution. Danfoss has worked with CO2 industrial refrigeration solutions for over 20 years and has an extensive product lineup that supports both subcritical and transcritical applications.

By making propane systems more energy efficient

Danfoss will also debut a new version of its Intelligent Purging System (IPS 8) for systems working with propane. The IPS 8 automatically adjusts pressure levels and only purges when needed, which helps reduce energy consumption and costs.

By decarbonising industrial heat pumps and process chillers

Chillventa attendees will also see how Danfoss’ portfolio for industrial heat pumps and process chillers helps food and beverage manufacturers and retailers reuse waste heat and improve the total efficiency ratio of their HVAC systems. The Danfoss booth will feature technologies that support high-temperature industrial heating systems, such as the six-cylinder BOCK HGX56 CO2 T compressor, which allows for a wider spread and faster uptake of large CO2 heat pumps and industrial refrigeration systems. Danfoss’  PSG Scroll compressor and Palladio Screw compressor (trusted by Danfoss), which expand the applications of high-temperature heat pump systems, will also be on display.

By making it easier to design and commission systems

The Danfoss booth will feature the new EKE 400 controller packaged in a panel solution, which delivers high efficiency and full control of evaporators. The panel reduces installation costs by up to 50%, and it features a distributed controls system that optimizes hardware, installation and commissioning.

Shifting perspectives on food service refrigeration

For the next link in the cold chain, Danfoss offers a wide range of refrigeration solutions for HORECA that will be on display at this year’s Chillventa. Installers and contractors working with HORECA refrigeration have already had to shift their perspective in terms of refrigerants, as the new F-gas regulations take effect. Given the wide range of low GWP and natural refrigerants to choose from, Danfoss’ team of refrigerant experts will be on-hand to talk about how to build a compliant, future-ready refrigeration system. Attendees will see the company’s full portfolio of solutions that are certified/approved to use in low GWP and natural refrigerant applications, as well as condensing units and solenoid valves for CO2.

By offering connected solutions

The Danfoss booth will also feature cold room solutions, such as Optyma Control and Optyma Plus INVERTER, as well as solenoid valves and superheat control solutions that increase energy efficiency but also the VLT® Refrigeration Drive FC 103. And attendees interested in connectivity in cold rooms will particularly benefit from seeing Danfoss’ wide range of IoT and connectivity solutions. These solutions monitor temperature levels and send alerts when the temperature exceeds a set range, and the accompanying apps include troubleshooting and performance dashboards that enable users to service equipment remotely and identify issues before they result in equipment failure.

By helping companies meet their decarbonisation numbers

Danfoss will also showcase the work it’s doing with food and beverage manufacturers to reduce carbon emissions by designing holistic refrigeration solutions, including highlighting concrete cases where the company has worked with customers to design a refrigeration system or glassdoor merchandiser, that significantly reduces the company’s carbon footprint.

Shifting perspectives on food retail

At the final link in the cold chain, the retail supermarket, Danfoss brings a unique level of real-world experience from its Smart Store concept in Nordborg, Denmark. The combined Smart Store supermarket and Application Development Centre demonstrate how, by using existing and available technology and solutions, supermarkets can reduce food loss, improve food safety and optimise operations, all while working towards net zero and contributing to a community’s energy eco system.

Booth visitors will be able to see the results achieved in the Danfoss Smart Store and learn how they can take advantage of the same technology.

By optimising the digital infrastructure

Danfoss food retail experts will also show how the company’s controllers, expansion valves and high-accuracy sensors can make refrigeration cases more energy efficient.

They will also present the System Manager AK-SM800A – the key component of the intelligent ADAP-KOOL refrigeration and HVAC systems for food retail. The System Manager coordinates data to and from the individual refrigeration and HVAC controllers, including temperature data for logging and alarms. It can optimize different functions, such as suction pressure and coordinated defrosting, resulting in significant energy savings and optimum temperature control. It also plays a crucial role in the digital infrastructure, collecting and delivering data to and from Danfoss’ monitoring and management software – Alsense.

Conference attendees will learn more about Alsense and how it can optimise food retail operations, boost energy efficiency and reduce food loss. Danfoss’ food retail experts will demonstrate how supermarket managers can use the platform to reduce food waste and maximise refrigeration performance.

Shifting perspectives on comfort cooling and heating

Attendees will also see Danfoss’ Turbocor compressors with the Active Cooling option that further expands the application scope of oil-free centrifugal technology. The company’s broad R290 portfolio caters to the European market’s emphasis on sustainability, offering options for various hydronic heat pump and chillers applications, such as the new VZN 220 Inverter Scroll compressor along with the microplate heat exchanger H62-CZ. And Danfoss will dedicate an entire section of its booth to highlight how companies can use existing technology to recover industrial waste heat and use it for internal processes and district heating.

Getting a new perspective on today’s challenges

In addition to showcasing the wide range of innovative solutions Danfoss offers to optimise the cold chain, the company views Chillventa as the ideal place to discuss new approaches to existing challenges. “Whether the topic is the refrigerant transition, decarbonisation or energy efficiency, we need to broaden our perspective, and find new approaches to heating, cooling and refrigeration,” says Jürgen Fischer, president of climate solutions at Danfoss. “Meeting the climate targets, we’ve set on a corporate, local, national and international level will require cooperation across the entire cold chain, from system integrators and contractors to manufacturers and retailers. We look forward to speaking with representatives from all these groups at Chillventa to see how we can work together to create a more sustainable, efficient cold chain.”
