Forty-five pupils and five teachers from the Wythall school spent 13 July exploring practical STEM concepts, from electricity and pressure to airflow and heat transfer. The visit forms part of Daikin’s wider commitment to supporting education and strengthening links between local employers and schools.
Throughout the morning, pupils built electrical circuits, used multimeters and infrared cameras, and investigated how heat pumps and air conditioning systems operate. A virtual reality demonstration allowed them to experience a heat pump installation and see how technical knowledge is applied on site, while quizzes and questions helped reinforce key ideas.
Miss Galbraith, Year 5 Lead Teacher, said the experience had been invaluable: “We have had a brilliant time at Daikin. The children learnt so much and were able to take part in real hands-on experiments and fun quizzes to consolidate their learning. We are so grateful and absolutely loved it.”
Elizabeth, aged 10, said she enjoyed discovering how air conditioning works: “My favourite part was using hand pumps and aerosol cans because it was amazing to see how changing the pressure could make things hotter or colder.”
Rachel McCrystal, Social Impact and Sustainability Manager at Daikin UK, said early exposure to STEM can help broaden children’s horizons: “Children begin forming ideas about their abilities and future careers from an early age, so it’s important that they have opportunities to experience STEM in an enjoyable and practical way. By opening our training facilities to local schools, we can bring classroom learning into a real working environment and introduce young people to careers they may not otherwise encounter.”
The visit follows the success of Daikin’s first Birmingham school STEM event in 2025, with Meadow Green returning for a second year after positive feedback from pupils and staff. Colleagues from across Daikin supported the day, sharing technical knowledge and helping pupils understand how scientific principles underpin technologies used in homes and buildings.
