Cooling towers disinfected after confirmed LD cases in Scotland

UK: Fourteen cooling towers within a 6km radius of the homes of two cases of legionnaires' disease in Renfrew have been disinfected as a precautionary measure. A number of the towers treated have also been sampled for traces of the bacteria.

The action follows five confirmed cases in the area over the last two weeks. Three people are still in hospital. Two of the five cases live in the Renfrew area and the other three cases have either visited or worked there during the two-week incubation period of the disease.

Investigations into a possible source are ongoing in partnership with the Health and Safety Executive, Health Protection Scotland, Renfrewshire Council and other local authorities.
