Compressors: Rolling out the scrolls

Development of the Scroll compressor continues apace with Emerson Climate Technologies announcing a number of new models at the recent Chillventa exhibition
Compressors: Rolling out the scrolls
WITH an increasing focus on part load operation, Emerson Climate Technologies has been first in the market with a complete range of R410A compressors for large, multi scroll, commercial applications, confirming its commitment to system efficiency optimization.

Large chillers, up to 500kW cooling, with Copeland Scroll compressors are now widely available in the market and following the success of its 30hp Scroll compressor, Emerson has now announced the introduction of a 40hp R410A unit, the ZP485.

Designed for tandem and trio configurations, it will enable the design of water chillers up to 600kW cooling capacity with two refrigerant circuits and up to 1200kW in units with four circuits.

Chiller and hp Scrolls

Digital Scroll technology is already a success story in VRF air conditioning systems and has proven to be the simplest and most reliable way for continuous capacity modulation. Now it is being introduced in reversible chiller and heat pump systems.

Depending on the system design, Digital Scroll technology in conjunction with Alco Controls electrical expansion valves and drivers can improve the seasonal efficiency of the equipment by up to 20% compared to conventional systems, says Emerson.

Main benefits of the technology are: the elimination of the electromagnetic interferences experienced with high-power inverters, wide capacity range from 10-100% to precisely match the load, and superior humidity and temperature control for improved human comfort.

A new extended range of digital modulated compressors has recently been announced: a range of Digital Scroll compressors from 4-10hp optimized for R407C, in single and tandem configurations for the process industry; a Digital Scroll range from 3.5-15hp compressors optimized for R410A, in single and tandem configurations for the comfort ac industry; a new range from 5-7hp Digital Scroll compressors with vapour injection (EVI) for R410A, for reversible chiller and heat pump applications with high water temperature requirements; new range from 5-7hp high efficiency Digital Scroll compressors for R410A, optimized for part load operations.

Latest generation Scrolls

Emerson Climate Technologies has started production in Europe of its latest generation R410A Scroll compressor for residential and light commercial applications. The Copeland Scroll ZPKS products are optimized for both cooling and heating system applications, and designed to meet the highest efficiency standards.

Winner of the AHR Innovation Award, the ZPKS product features technology improvements resulting in 2-7% improved efficiency, quiet operation (66 to 68dBA), reduced weight and dimensions and improved quality and reliability over the highly successful ZPK3 product range.
The expansion of the ZPKS model range includes tandem ready models for both single and three phase operation will become available by the end of 2008.

Refrigeration

The Copeland Scroll Digital range has also been expanded to smaller as well as larger refrigeration capacities for R404A. The new 3hp model ZBD21 and the new 10hp model ZBD76 now cover medium temperature capacities from 5 to 18 kW.

Emerson Climate Technologies is launching its third generation Copeland Scroll compressor for the specific needs of medium temperature applications in commercial refrigeration.
Summit provides a 5-10% improvement in seasonal efficiency and has undergone a significant size and weight reduction. Compressor weight is reduced by an average of 40kg. This offers the possibility to design more compact and easier to handle equipment with corresponding cost savings and also to reduce energy consumption all year round on site.

The new Advanced Scroll Temperature Protection design (ASTP) in place of the electronic module further increases scroll reliability; the product range has also been extended with two additional models of 8 and 9hp to better match refrigeration load requirements.
To address increasing environmental noise concerns the sound emission is also significantly reduced, ie up to 7dBA.

Emerson Climate Technologies has developed a dedicated Sound Shell for its line of Copeland Scroll compressors from 7 to 15 hp. The shell completely encapsulates the compressor, minimising sound leaks while cooling performance remains uncompromised.

Design techniques and materials derived from the automotive industry were used in the production of the Sound Shell and the use of low pressure reaction injection moulded parts (notably for the top cap, terminal box and the base of the compressor) allows a 10-12dBA sound attenuation.

Particular attention was paid at the design stage to ensure ease of mounting in retrofit, service and new installations.

The new Sound Shell is now available for the existing second generation Copeland Scroll compressor as well as for the Summit series, the newly launched third generation scroll range from 7 to 15 hp.
