The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) has announced the categories for its Building Performance Awards 2014.
The services that contractors provide to their clients are increasingly important, not least due to greater appreciation of the need to deliver value and energy efficient buildings, and the Awards will recognise this.
The Contractor of the Year Award recognises the contractor which has demonstrated an outstanding contribution to delivery of new or refurbished buildings to meet client expectations of performance, including occupant satisfaction, comfort and energy performance, throughout the life of the building.
The 2013 winner of Contractor of the Year was Norland Managed Services, nominated for its work maintaining the building services across Everything Everywhere's (EE) UK building portfolio. EE commissioned Norland to undertake a £1.5m project replacing the HVAC and lighting systems; passenger and goods lifts, and ceilings at its Darlington campus which encompassed two buildings and 1,000 staff. The judges commented: 'The winning entry demonstrated their interaction with the client's users, with training, post-occupancy evaluation and local sourcing prominent.'
Collaborative working is very much part of the ethos of CIBSE, therefore this Award has a particular worth. The Awards' Judges will look for evidence of the quality of the people, processes and buildings for which the contractor is responsible. They will seek examples of projects which are energy efficient and sustainable in construction and operation, and contractors who operate and develop processes, training and development of staff to support these objectives.
The CIBSE Building Performance Awards, which focus on actual, measured performance, not design intent or performance specifications, are judged by a panel of experts and industry leaders from a number of complementary spheres within the built environment.
