Cable & Wireless signs a $3.2m deal to install SolarCool

Bahamas Telecommunications Company Ltd (BTC), which became part of the Cable & Wireless group in 2011, has signed a $3.2m deal to install SolarCool air-conditioning systems across many of its Bahamian locations in the months ahead.

Powerplus Bahamas (BTC’s energy efficiency partner) installed the trial system in May 2014, and then left it with BTC engineers to conduct their own testing. Over the following six months, BTC’s own engineers monitored SolarCool’s performance and stability in detail.

Greg Uptagrafft of Powerplus Bahamas said: “We projected an energy efficiency of around 50% at the outset, however at the follow up meeting they told us we were way out! Our test system performance was much higher than this and totally smashed our projections and more importantly BTC’s expectations.”

SolarCool was introduced to the European market via Sedna Aire UK Ltd in mid-2014 and has since enjoyed rapid success in the ever-growing energy-efficiency industry. Solarcool already boasts installations across the UK, Italy, Malta, Estonia, Germany, Spain and Ireland. Further installations are pending over the next couple of months in Gibraltar, Morocco, France, Portugal and Cyprus, including installations via Sodexho (the facilities management corporation) throughout the UK Military of Defence bases on the island.

Mark Crabtree, managing director of international business for Sedna said: “SolarCool is a phenomenal product, a product that massively reduces energy on two of the world’s largest energy consumers – refrigeration & air conditioning. We challenge any company to put forward a renewable energy product with an ROI as low as SolarCool regardless of its application.”

Sedna Aire UK has also recently agreed to test systems with two of the top four UK supermarket chains on refrigeration. Chris Micallef, UK technical director added: “We have had efficiencies as high as 74% on staged and digital scroll refrigeration when the sun is out.”

He continued: “Yes of course, we all know the UK benefits from less sun than the majority of Europe, but we still experience an average of well over four hours a day, so why would any company not take advantage of this free energy with ROIs as low as we are achieving? Additionally and as importantly for the supermarket industry, the fact is, the hotter it gets, the more efficient SolarCool becomes, therefore summer maintenance issues become a thing of the past.”
