Applied Air Conditioning: Finding space for more LG Multi V systems

NEW for 2007 from LG is the Multi V VRF range, incorporating features and benefits for both the installer and end-user to give ease and flexibility of installation, high efficiency and low noise.
Applied Air Conditioning: Finding space for more LG Multi V systems
The range encompasses Multi V two-pipe heat pumps, (Multi V Plus and Space) and three-pipe heat recovery (Multi V Sync) each with a specific set of features suited to a wide range of applications. Up to 40 indoor units can be connected to the Multi V system and controlled via the internet, a PC, a deluxe or simple controller.

According to LG, the Multi V is the result of a two-year testing programme focusing on ease of installation and a zero rate of error. Newest to the range is Multi V Space, an energy efficient, space-saving and quiet VRF unit.

This outdoor unit, which can also be sited indoors, is inverter driven – both compressors and fan motors. It is also very quiet in operation, up to 10dB quieter than equivalent capacity conventional systems, claims LG.

It can be sited inside a cupboard or a plant room with the fans facing outwards on a louvred wall or exterior grille.

The Sirocco fans reject the heat away from the outdoor unit to the left and the right which prevents short cycling between the air-off and air-on.

Despite being designed with internal installation in mind, this product may also be installed outdoors if required.

The Multi V Space systems are available in either 5hp or 10hp in heat pump option only. The unit only needs access to the front, allowing it to be mounted inside a cupboard in the living area of an apartment block, for example.

The minimum installation space requirements are 900mm front access (service space), the rear of the unit can be fitted flush against a louvred wall, or ducting can be fitted if required (ESP can be increased if necessary up to 120Pa.

Side access is not required, so the units can be placed alongside each other.

One Multi V space unit can control up to 16 indoor units including Art Cool, cassettes, ducted, wall-mounted, and it can be controlled via the internet, a PC, a deluxe or simple central controller.

The Multi V VRF outdoor unit features: one inverter driven and one high efficiency compressor featuring Gold Fin on the condensing coils for durability; uniform and effective distribution of refrigerant; low noise/high static pressure outdoor fan; the PCB is encapsulated in a urethane mould for reliability and security; high efficiency inverter control; two comp cycle for uniformity in oil and pressure; LEV and sub-cooling system and R410A refrigerant gas.

There is also non-polar communication between the outdoor and indoor units. The system also has an auto restart facility.

The indoor units can be any mixture of up to 40 cassettes, wall-mounts, ducted or the renowned Art Cools – all from just a 40hp outdoor unit. Multi V is flexible in that the longest pip run can be up to 170m and a maximum vertical height of 50m.

The outdoor unit also uses ‘auto addressing’ – there is automatic confirmation of each indoor unit, without the use of dip switches, by storing and sending specific numbers to the EEPROM, a part within the indoor unit.

Another time-saver is the use of non-polarized wire. Communication between outdoor and indoor units is impossible if the polarization is different.

The Multi V houses an algorithm which automatically finds the correct polarity and enables quick, simple and easy communication.

There is also a self-diagnostic programme. During installation, commissioning and operation phases, any problem can be diagnosed easily and using a PC or notebook. If any error occurs, its error code will be displayed on the controller screen for action.

Complementing the Multi V is the Universal Synchro outdoor unit designed for applications where open space is a major feature. Easy to install it produces low noise owing to its use of MPS. Designated the Synchro unit, it can be synchronised for simultaneous on/off operation, by the use of a single wired remote control or, in the case of a convertible unit, an infrared remote control.

There are three Synchro variants – Duo, Trio and Quartet – and they take their names from the number of branch pipes associated with them – two, three and four.Specifying Universal Synchro is made easy, as it uses the same indoor units as the Universal range, which simplifies stockholding as they can double up on the potential use of any indoor units held.

One of the system’s key features is MPS inverter control, which allows energy savings of up to 70%. Economy is further enhanced through the intelligent MPS-driven system, which gauges the cooling or heating load and uses the correct compressor, or combination of compressors, to best achieve the desired effect.
