Ammonia leak kills 15 in Shanghai

Fifteen people were confirmed dead and 25 others injured, five critically, after a liquid ammonia leak at a refrigeration unit in Shanghai on Saturday.
The accident took place in a factory at Shanghai Weng's Cold Storage Industrial Company in Baoshan District, the municipal government said in an official statement.

According China's official news agency, Xinhua, the initial investigation showed that the liquid ammonia leak that killed 15 in Shanghai on Saturday was caused by a detached pipe cap.

Liquid ammonia may cause suffocation after heavy inhalation.

Baoshan District environmental authorities have sent environmental monitoring vehicles to test the impact of the leak.

Further investigation into the accident is under way.
