Air Movement: Winning air miles in Frankfurt

IN PREPARATIONN for the arrival of a fleet of the new A380 superjumbo aircraft, Frankfurt International Airport is undergoing massive expansion, and Fläkt Woods has been awarded a £2m contract to supply air handling units on the scheme.
Air Movement: Winning air miles in Frankfurt
Working for Imtech 4, one of Europe’s largest contractors, Fläkt Woods is supplying 22 EU air handling units featuring Econet energy recovery systems. These will be used to climate control a new building which links the old Terminal 1 Gate C and the new Terminal 2 Gate D and is known locally as the CD-Link.

The new structures will support the arrival of the A380 aircraft. Several new business and senator lounges (Iberia and Air France) will also be constructed and these gates will be open in the spring of 2008 Fläkt Woods modular air handling units offer full flexibility allowing different sizes and functions to be combined to meet virtually any air handling requirement.

Under the contract Fläkt Woods is also responsible for the installation of all the water piping. Additionally the equipment has been fitted with active carbon filters (a total of 3700 carbon filter tubes) for ultimate air quality.

All of the air handling units will feature Fläkt Woods’ upgraded Econet energy recovery system, incorporating changes that have made it 70-75% efficient (50% more efficient than plate heat exchangers, says the company). Econet integrates energy recovery, heating and cooling into one set of coils, so components, such as heating/cooling coils, pumps, valves, piping and insulation, are no longer required.

Advanced Econet also optimises the energy recovery using a new pre-programmed control system, which constantly ensures the minimum amount of energy is used to meet the air requirements.

Econet is supplied with a prefabricated pump unit. All necessary components for optimising the energy recovery such as pump, frequency inverter, controls and necessary valves and sensors are included.

This reduces installation time, saving both time and money.
