Energy Saving: Reaping the benefits of internet-based controls

IntroIN THE world of electronics, where developments come at a giddying pace, there is sometimes a benefit to being “new” to the market.
Energy Saving: Reaping the benefits of internet-based controls
Formed in August 2000 following the fall-out from Honeywell’s purchase of Elm, Glasgow-based Resource Data Management (RDM) could take a fresh look at what the market wanted without being hampered by legacy products. It also meant that they had no history of hitching their horse to proprietary controls protocols and could fully explore the freedom of internet-based systems. In addition, RDM has designed its products to be simple to use and understand and easy to install.

RDM employs all its resource needs in house and is able to design all hardware and software requirements.

The result is a business formed to serve the refrigeration industry that now boast a £6m turnover, nearly 100 staff and a range of control products to be found in the premises and fridges of many high street retailers including Asda, Marks & Spencer, Somerfield, Sainsbury’s, and the Co-op.

The product portfolio has also grown to include HVAC and energy management solutions and the company has also created a 24/7 remote monitoring bureau and call centre used by some familiar national companies to manage their maintenance.

The Data Manager is a front end panel that sits in the customer’s premises and monitors everything that is connected to it. This is the hub of the entire process.

Capable of being connected to this is a wide range of equipment under the Mercury range. Each model is capable of being used to control high or low temperature on coldrooms, integral or remote display cases. Latest addition is the Mercury ll which has moved away from the oval shape of the Mercury l to a more traditional oblong design. It is also smaller and cheaper and is said to be more powerful and more flexible.

Another new piece of kit is the cleverly-designed Shuttle – a USB device designed to monitor and record surrounding temperature in all sorts of applications from temperature controlled transport to blood products and drug storage.

The Shuttle will retain 16,000 readings at pre-selected variable sample rates and store them, ready to be downloaded onto a PC. With a working range of -35°C to +80°C.

Resource Data Management also provides a 24-hour, 7 days a week bureau that constantly monitors the status of clients’ systems. The data is delivered in real time using a combination of internet and telephone systems.

The data can be displayed on secure websites to give clients access to site information in an easy to understand format.

With the benefit of this information, energy consumption can be precisely measured and controlled and system operating efficiencies constantly adjusted and maintained. Faults can be easily identified, repairs programmed and maintenance planned efficiently. Life cycle costs can also be recorded and used to improve purchasing efficiency. Active FM offers dedicated management and operational teams; complete client visibility and access; standby generators and UPS systems; off-site back up systems, and off-site disaster recovery.
